Miracles of the Day: Episode 1

Lessons on the Ballfield

(Written March 25, 2018)

I figured I would go back to my “vault” miracles and share some of my favorites with you before writing about my “current day” miracles. Here’s one of my favorites. I used to read it to my youngest son before bed for years… he absolutely loved it, why?!? …because it’s about him, of course :)

I love it when lessons are taught to my kids through the kindness of others.

My youngest son plays travel baseball. We were at a tournament all weekend, which can be fun or dreadful depending on which attitude he shows up with. Well, this particular weekend was one of the dreadful ones. You see, my son gets down on himself pretty bad at times, and when he’s in a slump there isn’t much anyone can do to get him out of it.

He’s a good player and has two really great coaches, but one of them yells a lot. My son is NOT one of those kids that gets pumped up and angry and “takes it out on the field” instead he pouts and hangs his head. Again, there seems to be nothing and no one who can get him out of that attitude other than himself… and time.

On to the lesson! The team was having a rough time on the field and the umpires were not helping. But, you know what they say, the umps rule the field, and their calls are the ones that matter. Well, one of our coaches had about enough with the bad calls. He got angry and yelled at the umpire, and got thrown out of the game. This of course brought a bit of a smile to my sons face, as he was just yelled at by the coach the last inning… (I know, not his best hour, but hey, he was 9 years old at the time).

Ok, on to the REAL lesson. After the game my son was over at the snow cone stand. The coach from the opposing team was buying him a snow cone. I asked why, and he explained that my son had a kind heart. He said he was so impressed that my son took the time to make sure the catcher on his team was ok after getting pelted with ball.

What an awesome life lesson! I immediately looked up and thanked God. Then, I reiterated to my son that… in life when you get angry and lose your temper, you get thrown out, but when you are kind and care for others, you sometimes are surprised with a free snow cone!
